As a father of two boys, Chris Legaux has always been an adventurer. After marrying his wife Susie, Chris began the search for furniture and home accent pieces to fill their new home. He quickly became frustrated by the standard, replicated pieces with no unique character. It seemed the dignity of the original tree had been lost in the mass produced furniture business. Surely, the tree had a story to tell.

Thus began Chris's adventure as a craftsman. For over 20 years now, Chris has reclaimed trees to give them a second chance to live on as beautiful furniture and decorative art. These urban trees, which often stand for 50-70 years, are given a new look through the Urban Hobbit's detailed craftsmanship.

Just as each tree is unique, every finished piece from the Urban Hobbit is one-of-a-kind. Unlike standard wood found at the lumber yard, urban lumber often has weird and wild grains and figures that tell the history of the living organism and reveal the beauty found in its imperfections. What an adventure to bring forward the natural figures of the wood to create unique heirlooms and gifts. It turns out these trees do have stories to tell.

Every piece of wood used in Urban Hobbit pieces is hand-selected and solar kiln dried on-site, bringing forward the natural figures of the wood that create unique heirlooms and gifts.

In every stage of creating these pieces, the Urban Hobbit focuses on sustainability - using trees, sawmills, and even beeswax for finishes that are  sourced locally. While at a regular mill there is little to no chance of finding two boards from the same tree, at the Urban Hobbit the wood from the original tree stays together to be repurposed as beautiful pieces for your home.
